Legendary former Chelsea midfielder Gianfranco Zola feels that Inter Milan’s “extraordinary season” already began last campaign.

The former Italian international praised the Nerazzurri whilst speaking to Italian broadcaster DAZN, via FCInterNews.

This season, Inter have been nothing short of a dominant force in Serie A.

The Nerazzurri have played 34 matches so far in the league. They have won 28 of them, drawing five and losing just one.

That is a stark contrast to last season, when the Nerazzurri lost a whopping twelve matches.

However, the picture looks a little different when the first two thirds of last campaign are excluded.

Apart from one loss away to Napoli last May, Inter largely won their matches down the stretch.

By that point, the Partenopei had already been crowned champions. And Inter were on track to clinch a top four spot that had looked in jeopardy for weeks.

At the same time that Inter were getting their act together in Serie A, they were also going on a remarkable run in Europe.

The Nerazzurri reached the final of last season’s Champions League.

There, they only narrowly lost to Manchester City, going toe-to-toe with the Premier League juggernauts.

There is no doubt that that final against City, even in defeat, was a big boost to Inter’s self-belief and confidence.

And that has shown this season.

In Europe the Nerazzurri have had a bit of a disappointment. They exited the Champions League at the round of sixteen stage against Atletico Madrid.

But in the league, Inter have carried over their form from the run-in last season.

Inter have been relentlessly consistent, and have marched to the Serie A title.

Zola remarked that “Inter have had an extraordinary season in the league.”

“The team were already starting to grow in the final part of last season,” he added.

“If they can keep this level of football up next season, the Milan, Juve, and Napoli will have to do a lot more.”
