Baltimore Orioles Extend Historic Streak With Clutch Win Over Philadelphia Phillies

The Baltimore Orioles added another notch to their belt Monday night.

The Orioles were on the road against the Philadelphia Phillies, tied 2-2 in the top of the ninth. Rookie outfielder Colton Cowser stepped up to the plate with two outs, and he hit an RBI double off of closer Craig Kimbrel that put Baltimore on top.

Reliever Cionel Perez came in to get the save, locking up the Orioles' 3-2 victory.

By beating the Phillies in Monday's series opener, the Orioles officially extended their streak of series without getting swept to 72. That streak is tied for the fifth-longest in MLB history, according to MLB.com's Sarah Lang.

The longest such streak belongs to the St. Louis Cardinals, who avoiding getting swept in 125 consecutive series from 1942 to 1944.

No team has even strung together 73 sweepless series in a row since, with the San Diego Padres and Atlanta Braves getting stuck at 72 in 1999 and 2005, respectively.

The last time the Orioles were swept was from May 13-15, 2022, against the Detroit Tigers.

Baltimore's next two games against Philadelphia won't impact their streak, moving the pressure to their upcoming home set against the New York Yankees. By winning just one of those three games, the Orioles can further cement their place in the history books.

The Orioles are currently in first place in the AL East at 62-38. Baltimore managed to grab hold of the top spot after the All-Star break for the first time since 2016 when they took three out of four against the Tampa Bay Rays last weekend.
