Sherrone Moore has interesting comments about Michigan QB battle

There has been plenty of talk about the Michigan football quarterback battle and there will continue to be. Until someone is named the starter, it will be topic No. 1 among fans and pundits.

Whether it was Davis Warren or Alex Orji, most Michigan football fans had a preference after watching the spring game. Warren threw two touchdowns and had 3 completions beyond 35 yards. Orji went 12-for-18 and also had a 20-yard rushing touchdown.

To be fair, Orji also didn’t have the running game, which is his strong suit. Michigan allowed him to run on a scramble or two, but he didn’t have any designed runs called. That would change the game if he could run.

It’s also easier to stand in the pocket and deliver a ball if you know you won’t be hit because it’s not completely live on the quarterbacks. There was a tag for a sack, but the point remains.

Still, Warren and Orji acquitted themselves well. They’ll need to improve, but the potential is there. After the spring game, Kirk Campbell told reporters that the transfer portal wasn’t part of their thought process.

It’s hard to know what that means exactly. If a talented quarterback, with experience did become available, Michigan football would have to take a look. That’s why Sherrone Moore when asked on Monday if the starting quarterback would come from the current roster, said: “We’ll see.”

Moore can’t predict the future. He didn’t say anything bad about the quarterbacks. He also didn’t talk about any specific needs in the portal. Yet, he didn’t use the same language as Campbell, which I thought was interesting.

That being said, my bet is that the starting quarterback is on the roster. Who that will be is still an open question.

Another interesting comment by Sherrone Moore on Jack Tuttle

People want to write off Jack Tuttle. I get it. He’s only started a few games and hasn’t been a full-time starter. But he was a top-200 recruit coming out of high school. Tuttle is actually ranked higher than any quarterback on the roster except Jadyn Davis, at least in terms of high school ranking.

“He’s got the talent,” Moore said of Tuttle. That’s something people forget. He completed 88 percent of his passes last season (on just 17 attempts) but he’s played and started in Big Ten games before.

That’s valuable. Even if it’s just as a backup. As I’ve said, a Tuttle/Alex Orji dual quarterback situation wouldn’t shock me. Orji will be used as a runner this season — starting quarterback or not. He was used last season with J.J. McCarthy and he throws well enough to make teams pay if they overplay to stop the run.

Orji will make life easier for the running backs, receivers, and tight ends because the defense will have to account for his legs. Warren and Tuttle don’t. Orji also needs to get better at reading defenses and deciding where to go with the football.

Tuttle will get his chance according to Moore. He should. Michigan should take a shot on a transfer portal quarterback if one becomes available, but I’d guess that the Wolverines start Orji, Warren, or Tuttle against Fresno State with Orji being my prediction if there was a game tomorrow.
